 By the September issue of 1991, she had some examples of some 6 1/2" blocks that were sent in. More sponsorship and even a contest!

A Quilt for Canada from Canada Quilts Magazine, September 1991

Canadians everywhere are invited to participate in an expression of unity; the making of A Quilt For Canada. Individuals arc asked to express their feelings about their country on a 6 1/2 inch fabric square which will be joined with the squares of other Canadians to form one united whole. The finished quilt will be hung in the Nation's Capital in time for the cele­brations of Canada's 125th birthday. 

Any Canadian is welcomed and en­couraged to participate; whether you are a native or a recent immigrant, or a Canadian living out of country. Blocks are welcome from both sexes, all ages, races, languages and cul­tures that exist in Canada and give the land its essence. 

The blocks must be of fabric, and can be executed in any manner; patch­ work, applique, embroidery, weav­ing, fabric paints or crayons, photo transfer; or whatever the creator chooses, provided it can be sewn to Guild Participation in other fabric squares and will not erase, smudge, or run with handling. Cultural significance may be added if the maker chooses, by including fabrics from their country of origin, or from their ancestors. The block's design, whether tradi­tional, original, pictorial or symbolic, must in some way represent the maker's feelings about Canada, or an aspect of Canada that is important to the designer. 

Blocks are due no later than April 1, 1992. The assembled quilt top will be quilted at several public quilting bees across Canada, with the final quilting taking place at Quilt Canada '92 in Thunder Bay, June 2-6, 1992.

People will be welcomed to sit at the quilt frame and put a few lines of stitching into the quilt, to symbolize how Canadians can work together with a common goal, despite our dif­ferent backgrounds and needs. The quilt will be presented as a gift from its many makers, to the people of Canada on July 1st, our 125th birthday, and will hang at Canada House. Canada House will be the fo­cus of Canada's 125th Anniversary special activities and programs in the Capital. This meeting place, open from May 6 to September 7, 1992, will be located in the Lome Building at 90 Elgin Street, a five minute walk from Parliament Hill.

To participate, make your block ex­actly 6 1/ 2" square, and of fabric. Send it to "A Quilt For Canada" c/o Canada Quilts Magazine, PO Box 39 Station A, Hamilton Ontario, L8N 3A2.-Enclose a short statement of the block's significance, and your name and address.

Guild Participation in A Quilt for Canada

After April 1, 1992, when all the blocks for A Quilt For Canada have been received, guilds and other quilt organizations are invited to become co­-sponsors of this project. In an effort to involve as many Canadians from as many parts of Canada as possible, sections of the quilt will be made available for organizations wishing to hold public quilting bees. This could be done in conjunction with a quilt show, or as a separate event. The section will conic already assembled with sufficient backing fabric, Mountain Mist batting donated by Steams Canada Inc., and needles and threads from J. &.P Coats (Canada) Limited. Sections will be available after April 1, 1992. You will also be supplied pages for people to sign as they participate. The final joining of sections, and quilting of the centre panel, will take place at Quilt Canada '92.
